Former SCOPA Chairperson Themba Godi says what was said by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi during the media briefing held yesterday is a bombshell no one expected and a proper inquiry should be conducted.
During the briefing, Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of being in constant contact with individuals linked to criminal activities.
He also accused some senior police officials of being involved in corruption.
Godi says President Cyril Ramaphosa has not done much to deal with allegations of corruption in the police.
I mean theres always been suspicions about previous ministers involvement. But the starkness of what General Mkhwanazi presented, is too interesting to be ignored or to be dismissed off hand. I think he has opened a jelly box bottle. I dont think anybody can dismiss this off hand. Weve seen already the response from some ANC leaders pointing in the direction of a coverup. But I think the public disgust with crime levels and with corruption will be so strong that there will have to be an enquiry.
