A series of tragic incidents involving Cape Peninsula baboons has drawn attention to the severe risks wildlife faces in urban areas, Cape town Etc reports.

Over the past week, the Cape Baboon Partnership CBP and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA responded to multiple emergencies, with several baboons succumbing to injuries or illness .

Among the casualties were a severely ill juvenile from the CT2 troop and an adult female from the Tokai troop, both requiring humane euthanasia.

In separate incidents, a subadult male from MT2 was killed in a vehicle collision, while a juvenile male from CT1 died from dog attacks. Meanwhile, rescuers continue searching for an adult male from MT1 spotted with a snare around his body.

Urban hazards threaten wildlife survival

This comes after human-dominated landscapes present numerous dangers to wildlife, including baboons, caracals, porcupines, and penguins. Common threats range from accidental harm, such as road accidents and electrocutions, to deliberate acts of cruelty. The recent spate of baboon fatalities underscores the urgent need for greater public awareness and preventive measures.
