Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has dismissed comparisons with the legendary Thomas Nkono, insisting he is still far from reaching the level of the former Indomitable Lions icon.

Speaking after Cameroons latest 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying victory , the Trabzonspor shot-stopper was asked whether he now considers himself on par with Nkono widely regarded as one of Africas greatest goalkeepers.

Onana, 29, added that his focus remains on enjoying football and representing Cameroon with pride.

Nkono, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, earned over 100 caps for Cameroon and was a key figure in their memorable 1982 and 1990 World Cup campaigns. His influence inspired a generation of Cameroonian goalkeepers including Onana himself, who has often spoken of idolising the former Espanyol and Canon Yaound star.

Since returning to international duty under coach Marc Brys , Onana has re-established himself as Cameroons undisputed No.1, captaining the side and delivering a series of commanding performances in the qualifiers.

The Indomitable Lions, who are still chasing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup , will next be in action when they host Angola on 13 October in Yaound.
