Nigeria striker Akor Adams has been granted permission to temporarily leave the Super Eagles camp at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON in Morocco to be with his mother, who has been admitted to hospital.

The 25-year-old Sevilla forward left the team base in Fes on compassionate grounds after receiving news about his mothers health. The Nigeria Football Federation NFF approved the request and confirmed that Adams is expected to rejoin the squad ahead of the quarter-final on Saturday.

Adams had earlier dedicated his first AFCON goal to his mother after scoring in Nigerias emphatic 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday night.

The striker has become a key figure for Nigeria since making his international debut in October 2025 during a 2-1 win over Lesotho. Under head coach ric Chelle, Adams has started six of the Super Eagles seven matches, forming a regular partnership with Victor Osimhen and scoring three goals in the process.

A former Montpellier and Sogndal forward, Adams has impressed with his work rate and finishing at the tournament, quickly establishing himself as a first-choice option in Nigerias attack.

Nigeria are chasing a fourth AFCON title and will face their quarter-final opponents this weekend, with Adams expected to be available following his brief absence from camp.
