A language spoken for more than 20,000 years by the San people of Southern Africa is on the verge of disappearing, but one determined elder is working to change that.
As highlighted in a recent Facebook post by Ignite Your Mind , 90-year-old Katrina Esau, affectionately known as Ouma Katrina, has dedicated her life to teaching Nuu, which is one of the oldest languages in the world and now considered critically endangered.
From her modest home in the Northern Cape, Esau has taken on the role of teacher, sharing the language with local children in an effort to ensure that a rich cultural legacy survives. She has even published the first children's book in Nuu, titled !Qhoi na Tjhoi, giving younger generations a way to connect with the traditions of their ancestors.
