Former Chelsea captain John Terry has opened up about the enduring impact of his missed penalty during the 2008 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United.
Terry said that the memory continues to weigh heavily on him years later.
In an interview on the Upfront Podcast, John Terry shared the lingering effect of the penalty miss, which occurred after a tense 1-1 draw that extended into extra-time.
Terry, revered as a Chelsea legend for his performances and leadership on the pitch, stepped up with the opportunity to clinch European glory for his team from the penalty spot.
However, fate took a cruel turn when Terry slipped during his run-up, sending his shot crashing against the post and ultimately leading to Manchester Uniteds triumph as they secured victory in the shootout.
That night we lost we went back to the hotel and the manager was asking us all to go down for a drink, but I stayed in my room because I couldnt face the lads. Eventually I went down and had a beer with the rest of the group, John Terry said.
I just remember standing in my hotel room on the 25th floor, looking over Moscow and asking myself, why then, why did it start raining then, why did I slip?
The hardest thing for me was that three days later we had a friendly for England against USA at Wembley and I scored a header from 18 yards out. If I could swap any two goals in my career itd be those two.
After the game, it broke me, I was bad. At the time, people are now open with the stuff now. I was going for emotions that probably a lot of people speak about today. But you just go, you have to bottle it and and get on with it, and you move on. and I very quickly moved on because I was with England and then went on holiday with my family, come back pre-season, and then you go again, but again, its something I will never get over, something I will never forget.
