15 Killed, 5 Injured In Eastern Cape Head-on Crash

A total of fifteen people have died and five others sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between a fully loaded minibus taxi and a bakkie on the R63 between Adelaide and Maqoma in the Eastern Cape.

Provincial Transport Department Spokesperson Unathi Binqose says it is alleged the Toyota Quantum taxi was travelling from Qonce to Cape Town while the bakkie was travelling in the Adelaide to Kwamaqoma direction when the accident occurred.

Both drivers of the vehicles died on the scene, including 13 passengers, while another passenger succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

Binqose says police have opened an inquest docket.

This is by far the deadliest crash we have experienced in a long time in Eastern Cape. Not even in December or the recent Easter holidays was there one crash that has claimed so many lives. The MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape Mr Xolile Nqatha says, our thoughts and prayers are with those families that have lost their loved ones, and we are calling for investigators to leave nothing to chance.
