Zimbabwes cabinet has approved draft constitutional amendments that could pave the way for extending President Emmerson Mnangagwas Presidential tenure until at least 2030.

The bill dubbed Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill of 2026, proposes a parliamentary process for the election of the President and further seeks to extend both presidential and parliamentary terms from five years to seven.

Under the current constitutional framework, the Zimbabwean President derives authority directly from millions of voters in an election, but the Bill proposes the President would be elected by Members of Parliament sitting jointly as the National Assembly and Senate.
