The Western Cape remains under close watch as recovery efforts continue after severe weather battered the province this week, Cape town Etc reports.

It follows heavy rains, strong winds, and disruptive waves that triggered localized flooding, particularly in Cape Town's informal settlements and parts of the Cape Winelands. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre PDMC, alongside local municipalities and relief organizations, is coordinating response efforts while assessing the full extent of the damage.

Cape Town's informal settlements hit hardest

The City of Cape Town reported significant flooding in several informal settlements, displacing hundreds of residents. The worst-affected areas include:

  • Langa Intertersite and Sanitizer settlements: 67 homes damaged, impacting 240 people.
  • Masicendani: 20 structures flooded, affecting 80 individuals.
  • Kampies, Strandfontein: 50 dwellings inundated, leaving 150 residents in need of assistance.

The City's Informal Settlements Management team is working with the National Department of Human Settlements to evaluate the damage, while NGOs provide emergency aid. Sandbags and milling have been deployed to mitigate further flooding.
