Sam Sodje has warned that delay in the appointment of a new head coach could derail the Super Eagles chances of securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, is yet to name a substantive head coach for the Super Eagles less than two months before the teams next two games in the qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.

Sodje, who was capped five times by Nigeria, urged the NFF to expedite action on the appointment of a new head coach for the three-time African champions.

"I think we're leaving it too late. A couple of months going into the World Cup qualifiers, not having a manager doesn't look good at all because it's not club football, Sodje told Sports 247.

A coach doesn't see his players as often as he would love to because it's international football. It's so sad that we don't see how important preparation is to these games.

Former handler of the team Jose Peseiro left the post at the end of his contract in February.

Finidi George, who took charge of the team for the friendlies against Ghana and Mali, and Emmanuel Amuneke are the leading candidates to succeed the Portuguese.
