A man, who allegedly held his young son and female partner hostage for more than 4 hours in a car at a property in Wentworth Sunday morning, has released them unharmed.

ALS Paramedics spokesman in Durban, Garrith Jamieson says the armed man was prevented by police to drive off from a block of flats with his partner and son - believed aged five in his car.

Jamieson says police negotiators were successful in helping secure the release of the boy first and his partner a short while later.
