wc schools face surge in theft and vandalism during winter holidays

The safety and security of educational institutions in the Western Cape have come under serious threat during school holidays, with alarming statistics revealing a significant spike in theft and vandalism incidents this year, Cape town Etc reports.

Despite the Western Cape Education Departments proactive measures to subsidise holiday security at 424 schools in high-risk areas, 57 cases of burglary and vandalism were reported during the June/July holiday period, marking an increase compared to the previous year.

This surge in criminal activity, which affected 46 schools, stands in stark contrast to 2024s total of 45 incidents involving 39 schools, raising serious concerns among educators, parents and local authorities alike.

Although many of these incidents were relatively minor, the cumulative effect is deeply felt in the day-to-day functioning of schools, as essential items and fixtures continue to be targeted.

According to reports, the stolen or damaged items comprise a wide range of school essentials, including building fixtures, fencing, electrical wiring, cooking facilities for school meals, sports equipment, computers, plumbing fixtures, and various consumables.
