Transnet has initiated legal proceedings to evict occupants from informal settlements located along key routes near Cape Town's central business district.
The move follows the recent death of veteran cyclist Dennis Hammar, who was attacked while riding near the Fourways informal settlement - a site identified as a crime hotspot between the harbour and the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
The City's Mayco Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, confirmed that the settlement in question is situated on land owned by Transnet. He stated that these areas have become associated with violent crime and present a daily risk to commuters and cyclists.
According to Smith, Transnet owns ten sites spanning from Old Marine Drive in Culemborg to the Womad interchange. These areas currently contain 274 informal structures and house approximately 424 people, as reported by Primedia .
