The Universal Service Fund USF has commenced the Mobile Network Tower Development Project in Mzimba, Nkhata Bay, and Mangochi, marking a major step toward expanding mobile connectivity across Malawi.
As part of the project's first phase, assessment surveys are underway across 21 districts to determine optimal locations for new mobile network towers. The initiative aims to enhance signal coverage and connectivity in rural, unserved, and underserved areas.
The project is being implemented by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority MACRA through the USF, in partnership with the Ministry of Information and Digitalization MoID and the Public Private Partnership Commission PPPC. It forms a core component of the World Bank-funded Digital Malawi Acceleration Project DMAP 2024-2030, designed to improve digital inclusion and access to ICT services nationwide.
