Workers union, General Industries Workers Union of South Africa GIWUSA is demanding the immediate withdrawal of Metrorails fare increases which are expected to take effect on the 1st of August 2025
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa PRASA has announced that single tickets will increase by R2.50, while return tickets will increase by between R5.50 and R6 depending on the distance travelled.
The unions president Mametlwe Sebei says the increases are steep especially for the working class.
"These increases ranging from a savage 33 to 43. Daily tickets will be increasing by R2.50 which means from R7.50 to R10 for single tickets, r eturn tickets will increase from R14 to R20, weekly tickets will increase from R16 to R25 and monthly tickets will increase by over R100. This is a criminal extortion of the working class, another blow from the GNU on the living standards and betrayals of commitments and promises of sustainable public transport as an alternative to deadly pollution, accidents and chaos on the roads."
