Arsenal legend Paul Merson has hit out at Real Madrid after the Spanish club defeated Manchester City via a penalty shootout in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second-leg tie on Wednesday night.
Merson said Pep Guardiolas side embarrassed and destroyed Real Madrid, adding that Los Blancos only progressed to the Champions League semi-final on pure luck.
Madrid defeated City 4-3 via penalty at Etihad Stadium after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
City dominated possession and had more shots on target than Madrid during the encounter.
Merson told Sky Sports: Last night's game was embarrassing. Man City did to Real Madrid what they did to Luton. For anybody watching that game, it was mind-blowing. It was pure luck that Real got past City. They absolutely destroyed them. They embarrassed them.
It was one of the most one-sided games I have ever seen, and City were just bang out of luck, losing on penalties. Real Madrid cannot come away from that game and think they are a better team than Man City. They are a million miles behind them.
