After 43 days of gridlock, President Donald Trump has signed an emergency spending bill to bring an end to the longest government shutdown in American history.
The bill, which temporarily reopens government departments until 30 January, was signed late Wednesday after the House of Representatives approved it by a vote of 222 to 209. The Senate had narrowly passed the measure two days earlier, as reported by the BBC .
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump confirmed that federal operations would resume normal operations after weeks of financial strain that left an estimated 1.4 million government employees either on unpaid leave or working without pay.
