A landmark peace declaration aimed at ending the violence in Gaza was signed in Egypt on Monday, with US President Donald Trump joining leaders from Egypt, Qatar and Turkey in what he called a new and beautiful day.
The summit, held in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, marked the official launch of Trump's long-anticipated truce between Israel and Hamas, a deal that has already begun with a major prisoner exchange. Israel agreed to release 250 Palestinian prisoners along with 1 700 others detained during its two-year Gaza operation, in return for the last 20 living Israeli hostages and the remains of 28 more, as per the BBC .
Trump, visibly upbeat, addressed the Israeli Knesset shortly before the summit, declaring that the long and painful nightmare is finally over, drawing loud applause and chants of his name from lawmakers.
