Cape Town's transformation into a sought-after cruise destination is proving to be a major win for the local economy.

Officials say the influx of cruise ships has contributed R1.32 billion to the Western Cape , largely thanks to high-spending visitors who explore the city's restaurants, shops, and attractions before continuing their journeys.

More cruise liners are now choosing Cape Town as a starting or ending point, encouraging longer stays from international travellers. While some locals may find the increased traffic from cruise arrivals frustrating, there's no denying the excitement generated when a massive vessel docks at the V A Waterfront.

Unlike traditional safari or wine tour vacations, cruise tourism places Cape Town at the heart of the experience, drawing attention even from those who never set foot on a ship. Whether it's the enormous Costa Smeralda, with its rooftop aqua park, or the elegant Queen Anne making its maiden world voyage, these floating resorts captivate both tourists and residents.

Western Cape's MEC for economic development and tourism, Ivan Meyer, predicts an even more profitable season ahead, highlighting how the growth in cruise arrivals supports jobs, local businesses, and the province's global appeal. Wesgro CEO Wrenelle Stander agrees, emphasising that the ripple effects of cruise tourism extend well beyond the ships themselves, boosting everything from transport services to hotels and restaurants.
