In the first instalment of a two-part journey, Willem van de Putte sets out on a deliberately indirect route from Pretoria to the Eastern Cape, trading crowds and convenience for gravel roads, solitude and slow travel. With the Baviaanskloof as the eventual target, the trip begins as much as a test of planning and patience as it is of machinery, with the Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior pressed into service towing a fully loaded off-road trailer over long tar stretches and late-afternoon gravel.
