Nicola Pietrangeli, a celebrated figure in Italian tennis and the only Italian inducted into the World Tennis Hall of Fame, has died at the age of 92, the countrys tennis federation announced.

Pietrangeli, who was born in Tunis in 1933, was recognised as Italys greatest player before the emergence of current star Jannik Sinner.

Over his career, he amassed 44 singles titles, highlighted by back-to-back French Open triumphs in 1959 and 1960. He also reached the Wimbledon final in 1960 and was a two-time runner-up at Roland Garros.
