Recent system performance indicators released by Eskom suggest that generation availability and outage patterns have shifted compared to previous years with potential implications for how electricity-sector operations are planned and coordinated.
According to Eskom, the energy availability factor has increased from an average of about 56 in earlier periods to approximately 64,5 in the current financial year with some periods exceeding 70. The utility attributes this change to its Generation Recovery Plan and a higher level of planned maintenance activity.
Eskom reports a reduction in unplanned outages alongside an increase in planned maintenance outages. The utility also reports a year-on-year increase of about 4 400 MW in available generation capacity. Eskom says this additional capacity has reduced pressure on the system and contributed to fewer emergency interventions.
