South Africa has been hit with a large Internet outage affecting users across the country. It includes a lack of Internet access and users unable to use some online services like Microsoft 365

According to MyBroadband multiple outages on undersea cables near Abidjan in Cte dIvoire are causing downtime. The West Africa Cable System (WACS), the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE), MainOne, and SAT3 cables are affected.

WIOCC group business development head Darren Bedford confirmed that multiple undersea cables operating along Africas West coast are experiencing outages.

Multiple undersea cable failures between South Africa and Europe are currently impacting South Africas network providers. This means that certain customers are currently experiencing intermittent connectivity issues.

Reports were streaming in from South African Internet users about problems accessing many high-profile online services. These services include FNB, LinkedIn, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, X (Twitter), and Xbox.

Many broadband users, including Mweb, Openserve, Seacom, Telkom, Vodacom, Vumatel, and Vox subscribers, also reported problems with their Internet access.

There is no clear picture of what caused the multiple interruptions. Many internet service providers have access to alternative routes and it undoubtedly all hands-on deck to try and switch to other circuits. There is likely to be some improvement in services as circuits are switched, but until the reasons for the cable disruptions become clear, it is difficult to predict when normality will return.
