Spike In Road Deaths: Western Cape Pleads For Safer Driving

The Western Cape Government WCG has issued a grave warning following a tragic spike in road fatalities between 22 and 28 April 2025, during which 33 lives were lost, including 19 pedestrians, reports Cape town Etc .

As the region braces for another long weekend in the middle of school holidays, officials are emphasising the need for increased safety measures and responsible behaviour from all road users, particularly drivers and pedestrians.

The Western Cape Mobility Department spokesperson Muneera Allie expressed her deep concern over the alarming statistics, remarking, 'Our province continues to lose far too many lives on the road, particularly among pedestrians, who remain the most vulnerable group. We are also gravely concerned about the persistently high number of drunk driving arrests. These are not just statistics they represent families, communities, and futures lost.'

In addition to the tragic fatalities, authorities reported that 96 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during this same period, a striking figure that underscores the urgent need for a shift in mindset towards road safety.

With the upcoming holiday weekend, officials are taking proactive steps to combat these issues. The Western Cape Mobility Department's Traffic Law enforcement is collaborating closely with municipalities and safety partners to enhance visibility and enforcement.
