Former Economic Freedom Fighters EFF Deputy President and former uMkhonto we Sizwe Party MKP Secretary General, now Mayibuye national convener, Floyd Shivambu, believes that millions of South Africans have lost faith in existing political parties and the countrys electoral system.
Shivambu says this is due to the lack of efficiency in government and unfulfilled promises. Shivambu was speaking during a Mayibuye consultation meeting in Malamulele, Limpopo.
Last month, Shivambu announced that he will be consulting the nation on whether there is a need for a new political party and has since met traditional leaders and members of the public in his first consultative programme.
In 1994, we had 18 million voters and 30 years later we have 17 million voters despite the fact that the population has grown. Less than 18 million people voted and this means people no longer have faith and confidence in political parties and the electoral system. I have played a central role in the founding of the EFF, but as time went by - some leaders wanted the organisation for themselves and seemed to have forgotten about the people.
