Sipho Nkosi, the self-made mining magnate whose business ventures range from coal to renewable energy and financial services, will receive an honorary doctorate Friday from the Durban University of Technology. The Faculty of Management Sciences will confer an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Management Sciences in Business Administration at DUTs Spring Graduation at the Olive Convention Centre. The university cited Nkosis significant contribution and stellar accomplishments in entrepreneurship, business leadership, green energy, and empowering youth and women. Nkosi helped found Eyesizwe Coal in 2001 and later steered its merger into Exxaro Resources, becoming CEO in 2006. Under his leadership, Exxaro grew into one of South Africas top three coal producers while distributing over R6.6 billion in dividends to previously disadvantaged South Africans. His influence extends to seven companies he has led or shaped, including Talent10 Holdings, Tranter Holdings, Exxaro Resources, Sasol Limitedwhere he served as the first Black chairmanSanlam, Tronox Holdings, and Eyesizwe Holdings, according to Billionaires.Africa. In 2022, President Cyril Ramaphosa tapped Nkosi to head a team to dismantle regulatory hurdles to business growth. He now chairs Talent10 Holdings and the Small Business Institute of South Africa, advocating for entrepreneurship and inclusive economic growth. DUT officials said Nkosis expertise will enrich entrepreneurship studies through guest lectures and webinars aligned with the universitys ENVISION2030 strategy.
