Shippers should expect cargo movement disruption across the board because of impending strike action by the United National Transport Union Untu, the biggest workforce lobby group representing employees at Transnet.
Heneways said in a logistics advisory sent out to its clients that the labour action may have a direct impact on national freight movement and logistics operations.
The diversified freight forwarder highlighted the following potential impact on operations:
Delays in cargo movement via Transnets freight rail and port operations. Port congestion and reduced efficiency at terminals across the country. Extended lead times for import/export shipments. Possible disruption to container collection and delivery schedules.The advisory said: Following unresolved wage negotiations and ongoing concerns around working conditions and infrastructure at Transnet, Untu has issued notice of its intention to initiate protected industrial action. The strike is expected to commence shortly, with dates to be confirmed.
