Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says he will wait for President Cyril Ramaphosa to act on KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazis allegations against him, IOL reports .

Mkhwanazi has alleged that Mchunus disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team in December 2024 may have been influenced by a criminal syndicate in Gauteng.

At a media briefing on Sunday 6 July, he cited evidence of WhatsApp chats between Mchunu and Brown Mogotsi, whom he referred to as Mchunus associate.

Mogotsi was in turn allegedly communicating South African Police Service SAPS information to corruption-accused businessman Vusimuzi Cat Matlala.

Further analysis of the chats indicates that Matlala is financially supporting the Minister of Police and Mogotsi's political endeavours, Mkhwanazi claimed.

These allegations have prompted calls from the United Democratic Movement for Mchunu to step aside from his position. The Inkatha Freedom Party also said he should be placed on special leave.

However, speaking to IOL on Wednesday 9 July, Mchunu said he would be guided by what Ramaphosa decides, as he is applying his mind.

"It would not be fair for me to prejudge the process, as there are many aspects to this matter. I prefer to reserve my comments for now and allow the President to pronounce on what will happen next.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Minister denied links to Matlala and said he only knew Mogotsi as a comrade, not an associate.

The Minister has never met Mr Matlala, has never spoken to him, nor has the Minister ever requested or received anything from him, his statement reads.
