A new global report by driver education platform Zutobi has ranked South Africa dead last in road safety, placing 53rd out of 53 countries reviewed.

It's the second consecutive year that the country has been branded the worst for drivers-a position that continues to raise alarm among experts and transport authorities, as reported by Daily Investor .

The annual study compared countries using key criteria such as highway speed limits, legal blood alcohol concentration BAC, road fatality rates and seatbelt usage. Norway took top spot as the safest place to drive, followed closely by Iceland and Japan.

But for South Africa, the data painted a grim picture. The country's safety score dropped even further from 2023 to a worrying 2.88 out of 10, highlighting how little progress has been made to stem the bloodshed on the roads.

Alcohol-related deaths remain a major concern. South Africa reported the highest percentage of road fatalities linked to alcohol, at a shocking 57.5. This is despite the legal BAC limit being 0.05-moderate compared to other countries like the USA and UK, where limits sit at 0.08.
