In a series of targeted operations, Western Cape police have arrested four suspects for illegal firearm possession, seizing multiple weapons and ammunition in separate incidents across the metro, Cape town Etc reports.
According to the South African Police Service , the arrests, made between Friday and Saturday, form part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime and remove illegal firearms from the streets.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile commended officers for their vigilance, emphasizing that these operations are critical in ensuring community safety.
Key arrests and recoveriesOn Saturday, 05 July, members of the K9 Cape Town Unit and the Provincial Operation Command Centre Combat Team intercepted two men in a silver VW Polo linked to extortion. Acting on intelligence, officers stopped the vehicle on the N2 near Mew Way Road. A search uncovered a hidden Norinco pistol with 15 rounds under the passenger seat. The suspects were arrested, and the vehicle was impounded for further investigation.
During routine patrols in Delft's N2 Gateway area, officers stopped a suspicious male in Inpuaanga Street. A search revealed a 9mm Norinco pistol and seven rounds of ammunition. The 22-year-old, lacking a valid firearm license, was arrested on the spot.
