South Africa will launch its inaugural Coastal Climate Change Adaptation Response Plan Carp on World Environment Day 2025 in Gauteng on Thursday, 5 June.
Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dion George, will officially launch the plan, which focuses on preserving coastal ecosystems, marking a milestone in the countrys strategy to mitigate climate change.
Carp is South Africas first sector-specific climate adaptation plan dedicated to climate resilience. It has been developed in alignment with the Climate Change Act No. 22 of 2024, the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, and key international frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the department said.
The launch aims to raise public awareness of the dual threats of climate change and plastic pollution to coastal ecosystems in line with the World Environment Day 2025 global theme, Ending Plastic Pollution, while showcasing Carps integrated, science-based approach to building coastal resilience.
George will also lead a site visit at the plastic recycling centre, Extrupet, in Wadeville, Germiston.
The department is commemorating the day in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Internationale Zusammenarbeit, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Development Programme, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and Extrupet private sector.
