The South African Police Service SAPS has cleared the Head of Presidential Protection Unit, Major-General Wally Rhoode, of wrongdoing after a disciplinary hearing related to robbery at President Cyril Ramaphosas Phala Phala farm.
The robbery happened in February 2020 but was only publicised in 2022 when Arthur Fraser, the former State Security Agency Director-General, laid criminal charges against Ramaphosa for, among others, allegedly concealing the crime.
Multiple investigations, including one by Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka, cleared the President. However, Gcaleka found that Rhoode had acted improperly by investigating the housebreaking without a registered case docket.
