President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on Sunday 13 July on allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

The Presidency made the announcement on Thursday 10 July.

Ramaphosa to address Mkhwanazi claims

At a media briefing last weekend, Mkhwanazi made bombshell allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and the Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya .

Ramaphosa was attending the 2025 BRICS Summit in Brazil at the time and undertook to address the claims upon his return to South Africa, in view of the implications for national security.

President Ramaphosa has been seized with this matter in recent days and will, following various consultations, take the nation into his confidence at 19h00 on Sunday, 13 July 2025, the Presidency said.

Mkhwanazi claimed Mchunus decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team in December 2024 may have been influenced by a criminal syndicate operating in Gauteng.

He alleged that Sibiya had instructed the withdrawal of 121 case dockets linked to the Task Team to the South African Police Service SAPS head office, where he claimed no action was being taken on them.

Mkhwanazi further claimed businessman Brown Mogotsi, whom he claimed is Mchunus associate, had communicated internal SAPS information to corruption-accused businessman Vusimuzi Cat Matlala.

Matlala allegedly bankrolled Mogotsi and Mchunus political endeavours, the provincial commissioner added, citing WhatsApp chats and payment receipts.

Both Sibiya and the Minister have denied the allegations. Mchunu has since admitted to meeting Mogotsi, saying he knows him as a comrade and not an associate.
