The Metal Industries Provident Fund MIPF, which paid a measly R18,691.26 to a deceased members estate, has been ordered to make a R798,066.32 death benefit payment to the beneficiaries.
Deputy pension funds adjudicator Naheem Essop said the MIPF had paid the lesser amount because no contributions had been paid for two months when the deceased was off work due to illness.
The member passed away on September 18 2013. A death benefit of R18,691.26 was paid to the deceaseds estate account on August 26 2014. The quantum of the death benefit is the subject matter, said Essop.
