Police are still investigating the death of an initiate at a Vereeniging initiation school in Gauteng. The 19-year-old collapsed and died in the presence of other initiates on Sunday. Two other critically ill initiates were taken to hospital.
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says, An inquest docket has been opened for further investigation after a 19-year-old teenager was declared dead at an initiation school in Vereeniging on 28 December 2025. The cause of death is unknown pending postmortem results. No one has been arrested and police investigations are continuing.
Meanwhile, in the Eastern Cape, more than 20 initiates have died this summer circumcision season.
