Deputy President Paul Mashatile has declared ownership of a R28.9 million mansion in Constantia, Cape Town, that is reportedly legally owned by his son-in-laws company.

Mashatile made the declaration in Parliaments register of members interests for June 2025 published this week.

This is the first time the Deputy President has declared ownership of the property, which he described as a residential family home.

He also listed a R37 million residence in Midrands Waterfall estate and a third one in Kelvin, Johannesburg.

Mashatiles son-in-law, Nceba Nonkwelo, acquired the Constantia and Waterfall properties through his company Bilcosat between March and May 2023, according to News24 reports .

Mashatiles sudden declaration of the Constantia property comes after investigations revealed that he or his family allegedly uses it when he is in Cape Town, the publication reported.

Presidential Protection Service officers are reportedly stationed at the residence. In January 2024, Vukani Mde, the Deputy Presidents spokesperson at the time, denied claims that Mashatile used the property.

The Deputy President uses Highstead when he is in Cape Town and has not used any other residence. This will not change, Mde told News24 . Highstead is the official residence for deputy presidents in the Groote Schuur Ministerial Estate in Rondebosch.

In February 2024, the Democratic Alliance DA filed a complaint against Mashatile with the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests for allegedly breaching the members' Code of Conduct. This was in relation to his alleged failure to declare the use of the Waterfall property.

DA leader John Steenhuisen claimed at the time that Mashatile had failed to disclose registrable interests or had wilfully or grossly negligently provided the Registrar with incorrect or misleading details.
