OpenAI is developing its first in-house artificial intelligence chip in partnership with U.S. semiconductor company Broadcom, the reported on Thursday.
According to sources cited in the report, the new chip will be deployed internally to power OpenAI's growing AI infrastructure rather than being sold to outside customers.
The move comes as OpenAI seeks to reduce reliance on Nvidia, whose GPUs dominate the AI hardware market. The company has previously worked with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. TSMC and AMD on chip development.
