Trade union NUMSA has confirmed that it has signed a wage deal with the Bombela Operating Company , which runs the Gautrain.

The union had threatened the possibility of workers striking at the Gautrain commuter rail service earlier this month, after being issued with a certificate to strike by the CCMA.

The parties agreed to a 4.25 percent wage increase across the board, with the housing allowance increased by a R100 to R1 400 a month, while the night shift allowance was increased from R38 to R40 per hour.

NUMSA says the wage agreement has been backdated to the 1st July.

Coming from an earlier position of wanting a 7 percent increase for this financial year, NUMSA added that it was satisfied with the outcome of the wage agreement, saying it was negotiated under difficult circumstances, when the March inflation CPI had come in at 2.7 percent.
