Nigerias first film in the Cannes Film Festivals official selection, My Fathers Shadow is a deeply personal one for director Akinola Davies Jr.

The film, competing in the Un Certain Regard category, was crafted alongside his brother, Wale.

After the success of our short film Lizard, we knew wed have the privilege of making a feature and we really needed to, I thought, to make something that had a sense of urgency and something that meant something to me, to him, to my family, to our community, I guess to masculinity in general.

Set in 1993, this semi-autobiographical feature unfolds over a single day.

Two brothers encounter their absent father, portrayed by Gangs of London star Sope Dirisu, as he arrives unexpectedly to take them to Lagos.
