Nigeria has officially launched the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card ENBIC, a major initiative aimed at enhancing regional integration, economic prosperity, business facilitation, and security across West Africa. The launch ceremony, held in Abuja, was attended by representatives from the ECOWAS Commission, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community, private sector leaders, and the media.
The ENBIC is part of ECOWAS's broader strategy to implement free movement of people and strengthen regional cohesion. The card integrates biometric identification technology to improve security, streamline cross-border transactions, and promote seamless access to services for citizens across the ECOWAS region.
The launch in Nigeria comes eleven years after the initiative was first introduced by ECOWAS. The Federal Government emphasized that the card will serve as a secure and standardized identity tool, supporting both public and private sector operations while reinforcing Nigeria's commitment to regional cooperation and integration.
