Nigeria has decided to grant asylum and to provide protection for Guinea-Bissaus opposition candidate Fernando Dias da Costa, the Nigerian Foreign Ministry said on Monday, after military officers seized power in the West African nation last week.
The army seized power a day before the Electoral Commission was due to announce provisional results from a hotly contested presidential election between incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and Dias.
Both sides claimed victory in last Sunday's first round.
