The Nigerian Football Federation NFF has reacted to captain William Troost-Ekongs decision to retire from international football ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON.

The Al-Kholood central defender announced his decision to quit international football after being named in the Super Eagles squad for the tournament at the age of 32, having earned 83 caps and scored three goals.

His tally of five goals at the AFCON is the current record for the highest number of goals scored by a defender in the history of AFCON, having been named Player of the tournament at the 2023 edition in the Ivory Coast.
