The Multimodal Inland Port Association (Mipa), which aims to enhance logistics performance, boost efficiency, and reduce costs for the sector across Southern Africa, launches later this month.
Mipa will dbut at the Transport Forum where industry stakeholders, policymakers, and enthusiasts will gather at an online event focused on advancing cargo movement from road to rail via inland ports.
Cato Ridge Inland Port, Tambo Springs Development Company, Cape Winelands Inland Port, the Musina Intermodal Terminal, RailRunner South Africa, and RailRunner Services formed the new logistics sector association, which is dedicated to improving Southern Africa's supply chain.
According to the founders, Mipa aims to optimise efficiency and cost effectiveness by advocating for and supporting increased cargo movement via rail through the use of more inland ports.
'We are excited to introduce Mipa and its vision for a more sustainable and efficient logistics system,' said Warwick Lord, Mipa Chairman.
Lord will open the forum on 23 May with an introductory roadshow on Mipa, presenting its vision to implement practical intermodal solutions for the region. These solutions confront the challenges encountered at ports and along transport corridors, paving the way for enhanced efficiency and effectiveness in cargo logistics.
Mipas strategy revolved around promoting efficient multi-modality, Lord explained. This involves establishing a network of privately operated freight hubs with rail terminals across the region. These will provide a more efficient and cost-effective logistics service to optimise cargo movement and bolster regional connectivity.
The associations objectives are anchored in five pillars: reducing logistics costs, enhancing capabilities, refining supply chain management, expanding reach and bolstering compliance with policies and regulations.
Several industry leaders will share their expertise and insights on the future of South Africa's logistics network at the event.
Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) chief executive, Russell Baatjies, will deliver a presentation highlighting the pivotal role of rail as the critical connector between landside and seaside logistics systems.
South African Association of Freight Forwarders CEO, Juanita Maree, will explore the concept of an ideal South African logistics network, emphasising the importance of back-up port operations and freight villages within a multimodal structure.
Stellenbosch University Emeritus Professor Prof Jan Havenga will cover the topic: South Africa's inland port imperative: A critical and missing component.
Road Freight Association CEO Gavin Kelly will discuss the symbiotic relationships between transport modes and their contribution to economic success, offering insights into the interconnected nature of transport networks.
OTT Technologies lead consultant, Ria Vosloo will explore the role of multimodal terminals in connecting highways and byways of the sea, providing a comprehensive understanding of their significance in facilitating efficient cargo movement.
