Ncc Alarmed That Independent Supermarkets Are Ignoring Protection Act

The National Consumer Commission NCC says it has noted with concern that a number of independently owned supermarkets are still not adhering to the Consumer Protection Act CPA.

This comes after the commission conducted a series of inspections in rural and peri-urban areas and uncovered serious violations that threaten consumer safety and market integrity.

The violations include selling expired food and failing to label products correctly.

NCCs Head of Complaints and Investigations, Prudence Moilwa says expired goods are still found on shelves in some supermarkets.

It does look like the management of the Supermarkets is not necessarily clearing the stock to ensure that things that have expired, things that are not good for consumption, are kept off the shop floors. And this may result in what we have seen in the past, where consumers suffer foodborne illnesses and also are exposed to the kind of food that is not fit for human consumption.
