The MultiChoice Group is fast tracking an investigation into potentially separating SuperSport from the rest of its DStv offering, TechCentral reported on Thursday 12 June.
The news comes a day after the group reported a massive 1.2 million DStv subscriber decline across Africa in the past year. 600,000 of those were in South Africa alone.
Standalone SuperSport offering on the cardsIf MultiChoice decides to adopt this new model, subscribers would be able to choose between a DStv general entertainment and a standalone SuperSport offering.
Furthermore, SuperSport subscribers would be able to choose their preferred sport packages, whether centred around a particular sport such as rugby or soccer, or inclusive of all available sports.
The probe could be complete by the end of the current financial year in March 2026, MultiChoice Group CEO Calvo Mawela told TechCentral .
"We think that in this financial year, we should have a view of which direction to take, and as soon as we have made that, we should be able to update you," he added.
Additionally, the group is piloting DStv weekly bundles in Uganda. If successful, it would expand this option to other markets, including South Africa, Mawela said.
MultiChoices online streaming platform Showmax already allows subscribers to choose between Entertainment and Premier League plans - or to bundle them together.
In its annual results for the financial year ending 31 March 2025, the group attributed subscriber losses in South Africa to significant financial pressure faced by consumers.
This is caused by high unemployment, low economic growth and the ongoing effect of load reductions, it added.
