MTN Zambia officially launched the MoMo Virtual Card in mid-December 2025 during a high-profile event at the InterContinental Hotel in Lusaka. This new digital payment solution, powered by Mastercard and supported by UBA Zambia, is integrated directly into the newly redesigned MoMo App. It is designed to bridge the gap between mobile money and global e-commerce, allowing Zambians to shop on international platforms like Amazon, Netflix, and Alibaba without needing a traditional bank account.
The launch was attended by key government and financial leaders, including the Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati, who emphasized that the card removes barriers to global trade for ordinary citizens and small business owners. The card functions as a prepaid solution, meaning users can load specific amounts from their main MoMo wallet to the virtual card. This dual-wallet approach, combined with 16-digit card numbers and OTP One-Time Password verification, provides a significant layer of security against online fraud.
To get started, customers can activate the card through the MoMo App or by dialing 115 on the USSD menu. Once activated, the card details are stored securely within the app, enabling users to manage their subscriptions and digital payments conveniently from their mobile devices. This initiative is a core part of MTN's Ambition 2025 strategy, which aims to drive financial inclusion and economic empowerment across the country.
