Moroccos royal palace on Tuesday declared October 31 starting next year as a national holiday marking the adoption of a United Nations Security Council UNSC resolution backing the North African countrys autonomy plan for Western Sahara.

The resolution, adopted last Friday, states that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty for Western Sahara could be "a most feasible" solution to Rabat's 50-year conflict with the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which seeks an independent state in the territory.

Western Sahara, a tract of desert the size of Britain, has been the scene of Africa's longest-running territorial dispute since colonial power Spain left in 1975.
