The uMkhonto weSizwe MK has issued an ultimatum to President Cyril Ramaphosa to withdraw his announcement of a commission of inquiry into the South African Police Service SAPS by Wednesday, 16 July 2025.
In a statement on Monday 14 July, the party said should Ramaphosa fail to meet this ultimatum, it would challenge his announcement in the Constitutional Court, Parliament and the streets of South Africa.
It has also instructed its members of Parliament to file a motion of no confidence against Ramaphosa.
The President announced the inquiry on Sunday following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi .
Mkhwanazi alleged that Police Minister Senzo Mchunus disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team in December 2024 may have been influenced by a criminal syndicate in Gauteng.
Ramaphosa said the inquiry will investigate allegations relating to the infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates.
Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga will chair the commission, with Advocate Sesi Baloyi SC and Advocate Sandile Khumalo SC assisting him.
The President also placed Mchunu on special leave and said he would appoint Professor Firoz Cachalia as Acting Police Minister.
MK Partys ultimatum to RamaphosaIn its statement, MK Party rejected Ramaphosas grossly unconstitutional, politically dodgy, financially expensive and cowardly announcement.
It claimed Cachalias impending appointment is clearly beyond the powers of the President and therefore a breach of the rule of law and therefore irrational.
