The death toll from Cyclone Gezani in Madagascar has risen to 20, up from nine reported earlier, according to the country's disaster management office, as the Indian Ocean island nation grapples with the storm's devastating impact.
Gezani tore across the east coast with sustained winds of around 185 kilometers per hour, and gusts nearing 270, powerful enough to rip metal sheets off rooftops and uproot large trees.
Ahead of the cyclones landfall, authorities closed schools and rushed to prepare emergency shelters.
