Mapula Mailula 29 from Kopermyn village in Ga-Maja outside Polokwane in Limpopo, launched her emergency and crime-fighting app on 2 August 2025. The app will allow South Africans, especially those in rural areas to send distress alerts and track case progress with live location data.
According to the SABC , Mailula began designing the application in 2022 after witnessing delays in crime reporting in her home area.
She says the app meets the needs of villagers who live far from police stations. Users can send alerts directly to nearby authorities and receive a case number instantly. The live-tracking feature enables an immediate police response.
The app also supports a USSD code for those without smartphones. This feature ensures that residents who rely on basic mobile phones can still report emergencies and lodge cases. Mailula explains that the USSD option will prove vital in areas with limited internet access.
This app fills a gap in rural safety services. I grew up in a village where the nearest police station lay many kilometres away. I experienced challenges reporting crime after losing my mother to gender-based violence, said Mailula.
